DAWN'S REPORT ON THE SUCCESSFUL WORK PARTY ON MAY 16, 2009
They say "many hands make light work". I won't pretend that the work was light, but we did have many hands. About 40 sets to be exact. An overwhelming crowd accomplished our tasks in record time (we were done by 10:45). The large pile of stone was distributed throughout the park. Piles of mulch were brought in and placed in the two beds at the beginning of the park. Thanks to Liz for her truck to make things go quicker. Liz also brought poison ivy spray, so that those pulling weeds along the fence could safely take care of the poison ivy. Thanks to the unknown person who brought water for everyone. Thanks to the 3 donors who gave me a total of $60 in donations for waste bags. Thanks to one of the "guys" from "Five Guys" burgers and fries who gave out $10 gift cards. I hear it's a great place with big burgers and lots of fries.
The town of Hamden let us build this park, and we agreed to keep it up and support the maintenance. I think we prove this every year. Hamden has a unique asset in the dog park, which is being replicated throughout CT. We can be proud of the two hours of work we did today, and those that help to keep the park in shape on every visit. Keep up the good work....

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM HAMDEN R-DOG PRESIDENT
Dear Hamden Dog Park users:
Our annual meeting was held on April 6, 2009. (Minutes are here, PDF.) The park continues to function very well, now in our 6th year. We are contacted by groups throughout the state who are looking to start their own parks. Three opened in the past year. Your assistance is needed in several ways.
1. Work party at the park May 16 9-11am. Rain date May 17 (only if REALLY pouring on the 16th). Bring iron rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, gloves. We will spread mulch and gravel, pick weeds, do general cleanup of the park. Free T-shirt to attendees. The park will be closed to regular visitors at the time. Feel free to bring your dog if you can work and observe your dog.
2. Donations are needed to continue to supply the disposal bags. The town does not provide these, and it costs us $4 per day for the 100 bags we use in one day (36,000 bags in one year!). We need volunteers to pick a couple of hours on a Saturday or Sunday to collect donations at the park. Please email back your choice of hours if you can help with this. We will advertise the hours of collections. You can also send donations using the address on the bulletin board (or click here).
3. Problems with aggressive dogs, unlicensed dogs: It has been noted that this is becoming a problem. ALL owners are responsible for their own dog, as described in state of CT statutes. There are signs in the park that aggressive dogs are not allowed. If you see an aggressive dog, or an unlicensed dog, please point it out to the owner. If there is a safety issue, contact the animal control officer or the police. The ACO will be making regular rounds at the park, and he will ask the police to come by on the weekends. Above all, keep your dog safe and leave if there is a problem.
See you on the 16th!
Dawn Tiedemann

ANIMAL SHELTER UPDATE AND REPORT FROM THE SPRING MEETING OF R-DOG ON APRIL 2, 2008
Minutes of the meeting are here.
Dolores Giannini gave a presentation on the activities to date regarding the Hamden Animal Shelter. This began four years ago with a group that researched other shelters, met with architects and engineers, applied for seed money to pay for initial planning fees, researched and selected a site, and are currently working with the town to apply for the funds to build it. They started another group, Happy Tails, a non-profit group to raise money for equipment, furniture for the community room, medical funds for sick animals, vaccinations/ medical exams for current stray pets, and resuscitation equipment for all fire trucks in town.
Animals are now held at North Haven Animal Shelter, and are posted on PETFINDER. The proposed shelter will have 18 kennels, and a cattery for 30 cats.
NEW IN MARCH 2008
The Town of Hamden Animal Control Officer now has a webpage listing dogs needing homes, and those successfully placed. Go to http://www.hamden.com/ and find the Animal Shelter link under the Fire/Police menu item. Thanks to Joanne for taking care of this.
PLEASE HELP FEED RESCUED PETS!
The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an animal in need" for free! This doesn't cost you a thing! Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising. Here's the web site. Pass it along to your friends. http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com
REMINDER ABOUT PROBLEM DOGS (AND PROBLEM OWNERS)
Occasionally a particular dog and owner cause problems at the park, such as: the dog attacks other dogs but the owner refuses to take responsibility, despite the posted park rules that state that dogs must be under the owner's control at all times and aggressive dogs are not permitted (please review the full list of rules here). In addition, whether an incident occurs on private or public property, state law makes clear that owners are responsible for any and all damage caused by their dogs to people, property, or other dogs - i.e., if another dog injures your dog and your dog needs professional attention, the other owner should pay your vet bill.
Although, fortunately, such incidents are rare, if you encounter a problem like this, you should report it immediately to the Hamden Animal Control Officer (203 230-4080) or the police (911). Try to get the name of the offending owner, or at least the vehicle licence plate number.
This is a good moment to remind you to carry your dog's leash while in the park (also a posted rule) so that you can quickly leash your dog in case of a scuffle and walk away to another part of the park while things cool down.

DONATIONS NEEDED!
The dog park is supported by our citizen's group, Hamden R-DOG. Our main expense is the Dogipot bags; for one year the cost is around $1,200, and we have a few other minor expenses as well. We are rapidly depleting our account and urgently need your tax-deductible donations. You can find donation information here.
The bags are paid for by us, and are kept replenished by a volunteer. Please spread the word that the Dogipot bags are NOT provided by the town, so we appreciate when you bring your own bags to reduce our cost. Thank you.
PLEASE REMEMBER TO READ THE RULES AT THE PARK.
All of them; not just the ones on the trees!

| ABOUT THE DOG PARK
The Hamden Dog Park is completely fenced, has a brick path and patio, separate small dog area with separate entrance, benches and picnic tables (mostly for the dogs to play on or under!), a compressed gravel trail, and is accessible to wheelchair users. There are two handicap parking spaces.
Take a look at pictures of the site and a work party in 2001.
Pictures of everything that happened at the park in 2002 are here. Click here for pictures of dogs doing the usual doggy things in snow.
Pictures of the Grand Opening here.
Sketch of the park layout here (PDF).
Tips for park use.
Informational brochures about using the park and also about the effort to create dog parks in Hamden are available in the dispenser on the park bulletin board. New park pictures here.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP AT THE PARK
We depend on regular users to check the park and pick up any litter and dog droppings (from their own dogs and also from occasional dogs whose owners haven't yet seen the light). Bring your own pickup bags, but use one of ours if you forget.
Please read the rules and observe them. They are intended for your and your dog's safety, and a pleasurable park experience for everyone.
View the Dog Park Rules.
Remember, the small dog area is primarily for small dogs or for timid dogs visiting the park for the first time. If it is not being used for one of these purposes, it may be used as a time-out area for over-excited dogs.
We need to continue to fundraise to cover such expenses as keeping the waste bag dispensers filled, adding amenities such as a water faucet, additional tables, etc. Watch for fundraiser notices at the park every few months.
Take a look at some of our past fundraising activities here.

ENTRANCE TO SMALL DOG AREA
Thanks to the Hamden Dept. of Parks and Recreation for creating a separate, double-gated entrance to the small dog area, which is available for the use of small or timid dogs. The entrance is to the left of the main entrance and will accommodate those whose dogs are uncomfortable with the sometimes rambunctious "welcoming committee" of larger, curious dogs who may gather at the main entrance to greet newcomers.
